The Ira ISD board of trustees may look at refinancing the bonds used to pay for the school construction project.
During Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Brian Patterson told board members that four agencies that specialize in bond refinancing have approached him. He said he may schedule presentations by the four firms for the May meeting.
No action was taken on refinancing the bonds because it was not an agenda item. Patterson discussed it during his monthly report.
In 2013, voters in the Ira school district approved the $12.2 million bond issue to fund the construction project. In 2014, the board approved a 25-year bond note with a five-year call back. Of the $12.2 million, some $2.95 million were sold to residents of the school district. The interest rate on the bonds was set at 3.67 percent.
In other business Monday, the board approved the 2019-20 staff development minute waiver, instructional materials for elementary handwriting and sixth through eighth grade reading classes and the Region 14 Deaf Shared Services Agreement.
Trustees also approved the 2019-20 school calendar, which included an Aug. 21 start date and the final day of school on May 22.
Principal Dale Jones said no school will be held on Presidents Day, Feb. 17, and the Christmas break will begin with an early release on Dec. 20 and classes resuming Jan. 6. Spring break is set for March 9-13, the same as Western Texas College and Snyder ISD.
During the public forum, parent Stephanie Highfield asked the administration to consider changing the time or date of graduation in the future to allow family and friends to attend multiple ceremonies. She said changing the time of this year’s graduation from 7:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. would allow people to attend ceremonies at all three school Scurry County school districts.
“If it is not possible to change this year’s time, I ask that it be considered next year,” she said.
The board did not comment or take action on Highfield’s request because it was not an agenda item.
The closed session listed to discuss personnel was canceled.
