Snyder ISD officials announced Thursday that a school employee thought to have tested positive for COVID-19 in fact tested negative.

“Correction: We have been notified that the staff member who we reported to have a positive COVID-19 test earlier (Thursday) was indeed negative,” said Superintendent Dr. Eddie Bland in a statement issued Thursday. “We are relieved to hear that this staff member has not tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. We sincerely apologize for the error and confusion. We appreciate all of the concern for this individual. We are proud to be part of such a supportive community.”

Snyder Chamber of Commerce members report that the Fourth of July activities will continue as planned this weekend, including the Freedom Run Saturday morning and the parade and fireworks Saturday night.

A flyer posted on the Chamber’s Facebook page urges those attending the festivities to maintain social distancing during the events.

A showing of the movie The Sandlot at 8:30 at the Coliseum will continue as planned. The showing is sponsored by the Snyder Lions Club. Admission is $15 per carload.

According to a statement from Scurry County Judge Dan Hicks, “I have spoken to the organizers of several events. Instead of canceling this late in the game, each organizer has advised they will follow the governor’s orders keeping the groups to 10 or under. As for the parade, I ask Scurry County citizens to respect the order, social distance and wear a mask if you are in a group consisting of more than your immediate family.”

Hicks referenced a statewide mandate Thursday from Governor Greg Abbott requiring all Texans to wear a mask in public spaces.

Counties with fewer than 20 active cases have the ability to opt out; however, Scurry County has 39 current cases.
