Snyder Junior High School seventh and eighth grade students in Elias Montemayor’s art classes created artwork to display for Veterans Day.
Montemayor said the students had one week to complete their projects, which included research and brainstorming.
Part of their grade was based on the written descriptions of their art projects, Montemayor said.
Montemayor said he believes understanding why Veterans Day is celebrated is important.
“Every day, we spoke about the reason we are celebrating Veterans Day,” Montemayor said. “It gave them a greater respect and understanding of why we celebrate it, which is to have a better life for us and for our families to have a better future. We take a day to recognize (veterans) because we know they sacrifice every day of their life and the least we could do is honor them by doing our artwork to show them gratitude.”
Seventh grader Ke’Odisty Daniels said she chose to draw an eagle because it is the national bird.
“It’s strong and it cares for its young. I feel that’s what the Army does, it takes care of us and they’re strong,” Daniels said.
Eighth grader Jerry Lambert said it felt good to work on artwork honoring veterans because he knows someone who is in the U.S. Army.
“It feels good because they sacrifice for our country,” he said.
He said he chose to include the Veterans Creed in his artwork because it encompasses all of the service branches.
