The Scurry County Library is accepting donations for its annual book sale, which will be held Nov. 17-19 at the armory in Towle Park.
Library director Linda Jones said there is a wider variety of material this year and said the public is welcome to bring books, DVDs and even VHS tapes to the library so they can be organized before the sale.
The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 17, 10 a.m. 5 p.m. Nov. 18 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 19.
Last year, the book sale raised more than $2,000 for the library and its summer reading program. The total was a down from 2014, and Jones said the economy has been a determining factor in the amount of money people can spend at the sale. She said that even if the sale is not making as much money as it used to, the important thing is that children are reading.
“We would obviously like to make at least as much as we did last year,” Jones said. “But regardless of what people wish to donate, we want that book in their hands and in their child’s hands.”
The library will need volunteers to help work the front desk at the sale to check out customers and answer questions. The volunteers will work two-hour shifts, Jones said. Those wishing to volunteer may sign up at the library.
The library appreciates donations and materials that went unsold at previous sales are put up for sale the following year.
The week after each sale, library staff members mark the leftover books and movies with the year. They are then put back in the sale for two or three more years before they are recycled or given to a charitable cause.
The library will accept both hardback and paperback books, DVDs, CDs and VHS tapes. Magazines will not be sold.
