Majority of state not listed in a drought

West Texas, including Scurry County, are not in a drought, according to the latest map released by the U.S. Drought Monitor.
The map shows that 98.31 percent of Texas is not in a drought stage. Only four counties — Brewster, Pecos, Presidio and Terrell — are currently listed in a drought. Those counties are listed as abnormally dry this week.
Three months ago, 34.75 percent of the state was listed in a drought stage while this time last year, 39.8 percent of the state was in a drought.
Lake J.B. Thomas is currently listed at 72.1 percent full, down from 72.3 percent a week ago. This time last year, the lake was 45.2 percent full.
Through the first 20 days of 2016, Snyder has received only 0.14 of an inch of rain. The average rainfall total in January is 0.82 of an inch.
