With work set to begin the final week in September, the Snyder City Council approved a line-item transfer of $162,175 for the reconstruction of 37th Street between College Ave. and El Paso Street during Monday’s meeting.
The money will come from budgeted, but unfilled, staff positions in the fire marshal, police and animal control departments.
In August, the council approved a $477,347 bid from Nobles Road Construction, Inc., of Abilene, to rebuild 37th Street between College Ave. and El Paso Ave. The project will involve milling the top two inches of the current street and then filling it in with hot mix.
The balance of the money for the project will come from the $319,358 that was budgeted this year for street maintenance.
Public Works Director Eli Torres said in August the project was expected to take about two weeks to complete. He said the city hoped to keep two lanes of traffic open during the project, but that traffic flow details remained to be finalized.
The 37th Street project is not part of the discussions the council has held about implementing a monthly street fee or raising the property tax rate to pay for ongoing street repairs and maintenance.
The council also approved line-item transfers of $26,250 for office equipment for the Snyder Police Department and $15,300 for preliminary engineering fees for a federal off-system bridge project on 26th Street. That money also will come from budgeted, but unused funds.
