A new hangar should be ready by March 2017 at Winston Field airport, paid for largely by a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) grant.
It is a 90-10 grant, meaning Scurry County must pay 10 percent of the project’s cost and TxDOT will pay 90 percent.
After multiple unsuccessful bids on a 100x120-foot hangar, the plans were changed to make the hangar 80x100 feet.
Winston Field, which is owned by the county, had contributed $114,000 to the hangar project bid by mid-June. At a June 21 commissioners’ court meeting, commissioners approved an amendment for an additional $10,000 to be added to the county’s bid, money that airport manager Bob Snedeker said was already in the budget.
The county contributed $124,603 and TxDOT contributed $1,121,427.
Scurry County Judge Ricky Fritz said he is excited about the airport receiving its 30th hangar, especially at the price the county is paying.
“We’re getting a million-plus-dollar airport hangar for less than $125,000,” Fritz said. “That’s a pretty great deal.”
He said the commissioners’ court has not voted on a use for the hangar. At one point, a hangar for an air museum was discussed by local officials.
Midland engineering firm KSA did all the bid specifications. The bid was awarded to NC Sturgeon, LP, of Midland.
Surveying and construction began at the airport on Sept. 1 and the grant stipulates the construction must be completed within 210 days, which would be the end of March. Dirt has been spread and framework arrived the first week of October.
Snedeker said he is excited about the airport getting another hangar and more excited that after more than a year of unsuccessful bids and uncertainty, the project is finally getting underway.
“I’m glad we finally got it going,” Snedeker said. “I would like to see someone rent it out. But overall, I’m glad we’re getting it.”
