Big Country Electric Cooperative has kicked off its annual Government-in-Action Youth Tour contest for sophomores, juniors and seniors in its 12-county servicing area, which includes Scurry, Borden, Fisher, Garza, Haskell, Jones, Kent, Mitchell, Nolan, Shackelford, Stonewall and Throckmorton.
Three students will win a trip to Washington, D.C. and attend the Government-in-Action Youth Tour in June.
Sara McLen, key accounts executive with Big Country Electric Cooperative, said this year’s contestants will submit a video addressing, “Does residential solar make sense for you?”
“We want you to put yourself in the decision-making shoes for your household and make a video about your findings and conclusion. This is a hot topic and there is a wealth of information available for you to research,” McLen said. “Be unique, be creative, learn something and have fun”
McLen said students must first apply by downloading the youth tour application at bigcountry.coop and submitting the form to smclen@bigcountry.coop or by faxing it to (325) 776-2246.
The video will then have to be posted by 11:59 p.m. Jan. 26.
“Big Country Electric Cooperative completely covers the cost of the youth tour for the contest winners. That’s airfare, hotel accommodation, meals and attractions” on the 10-day trip, she said.
McLen said an alternate will also be chosen in the event if a winner cannot make the trip.
“Each winner and the runner-up will also receive a $1,500 scholarship from Big Country Electric Cooperative,” she said.
She said students’ parents or guardians do not have to be members or customers of Big Country Electric Cooperative in order to compete in the contest.
