More than 100 people turned out at Towle Park Saturday to have some fun and help out the families of law enforcement officers injured or killed in the line of duty.

Organizer Jeaneatte Pritchard said that the sixth annual Running for the Heroes event brought in more than $5,000 for the 5K run at Towle Park and the Bowling for the Badge event at Snyder Lanes Saturday.

After expenses, Pritchard estimated that more than $4,000 will go toward designated recipients.

The main beneficiary will be Darrell Campbell of the Snyder Police Department, who was critically wounded after he was shot responding to a domestic disturbance call in July 2011. He will receive 75 percent of the net proceeds.

“I really appreciate this,” Campbell said. “So many people turned out for this, and they don’t get paid for anything, they just do it.”

The remaining 25 percent of the net proceeds will be split between relief funds established for two San Antonio police officers who were critically wounded in February and New York Police Department detective Miosotis Familia, who was shot to death while sitting in her marked police car earlier this year.

During opening ceremonies Saturday, Pritchard and Scurry County Judge Ricky Fritz made a special presentation to the family of Donnie Medley, a former correctional officer who was killed while rendering aid at the scene of a traffic accident in February 2014.

“We had a great turnout,” Pritchard said. “People showed a lot of support for Darrell. The numbers could have been higher, I guess, but everybody enjoyed a good run.”
