Even though the sun is out and the snow is starting to thaw, local law enforcement officials continue to recommend that drivers stay off the roads if possible.
Scurry County Sheriff Trey Wilson said sheriff’s personnel have been working steadily to help motorists who have been struggling with the tricky road conditions.
“Yeah, it’s been pretty steady,” Wilson said. “Traffic is starting to pick up a bit, but the road conditions still aren’t the best. College (Avenue) is pretty clear, and I think 37th Street is somewhat clear. But we’d advise people to stay off the roads as much as possible.”
Wilson said he’s not aware of any serious accidents overnight, but the police blotter indicated 63 traffic-related calls from Tuesday morning through Thursday morning, including a large number of motorist assists as well as some reckless drivers and road hazards caused by vehicles sliding off the road.
Although many side roads remained under several inches of ice and snow, by late-morning larger roads were beginning to clear and dry out.
All three of Scurry County’s school districts, Snyder Christian School and Western Texas College remained closed on Thursday. Several businesses that opened Wednesday opted to close early and many opened late on Thursday. Several scheduled events were also canceled
The Scurry County Courthouse and Snyder City Hall were both closed Thursday.
National Weather Service meteorologist Julie Phillipson said low temperatures should ensure that the snow on the ground could stick around a while, even though there shouldn’t be any new snowfall.
“From the reports that we got from around Scurry County, it looks like anywhere from around 10 to 12 inches (of snow fell) out there, and depending on where, we had some of the stronger snow showers move through. There could be some locally higher amounts than that,” she said. “When you have that much snow, it’s going to take a little bit of time to melt off. It looks like it will start to melt off a little bit today with the sunshine. It looks like y’all are going to top out in the mid to upper 30s this afternoon, so we should get some melting. Then tomorrow, looks like y’all will be a little warmer, into the 40s up there, then definitely by the weekend. Fifties, and pushing 70, actually, by Sunday. So that snow will be nothing but a memory by the end of the weekend, I think.”
The next chance for precipitation comes Monday, Phillipson said.
“It looks like we’re going to stay dry. Our next chance of rain doesn’t look to arrive until probably Monday. Maybe some showers Monday and then Monday night into Tuesday,” she said. “It looks like we have another cold front coming down early next week. High temperatures are going to dip back down for y’all into the 40s on Monday, and then warming right back up through mid-week into the 60s. So back to those roller-coaster temperatures, but it doesn’t look like we have any snow for you in the forecast anymore.”
Although daytime temperatures will be warming up, Phillipson said nights will be cold.
We’re still going to be pretty cold overnight, especially where we have snow. The snow’s going to make the overnight temperatures even colder, so y’all might still be in the 20s up there the next couple of nights,” she said.
