Scurry County favors Trump

Scurry County voters supported Donald Trump Tuesday night as the county had its fourth highest voter turnout since 1988.
County Clerk Melody Appleton reported 5,333 people voted in the general election, which represents 56.23 percent of the 9,484 registered voters.
The highest turnout was in 1992 at 70.16 percent. Also topping this year’s turnout was 1988 (64.23 percent) and 1990 (57.25 percent), according to figures from the Texas Secretary of State’s office.
Trump, who won the race for president, received 4,403 votes (83.03 percent) in Scurry County while Hillary Clinton received 480 votes (13.96 percent).
In the only contested race that affected Scurry County, Republican Jodey Arrington won the District 19 U.S. House of Representatives seat. The seat was held by Randy Neugabauer, who announced his retirement.
Arrington carried Scurry County with 4,434 votes (92.14 percent) in the county. Libertarian Troy Bonar had 242 votes (5.03 percent) and Mark Lawson of the Green Party had 136 votes (2.83 percent).
Districtwide, Arrington finished with 175,980 votes (86.65 percent), followed by Bonar with 17,339 (8.53 percent) and Lawson with 9,761 (4.82 percent).
Scurry County candidates running for office were unopposed Tuesday night. Those running for office were 132nd Judicial District Court Judge Ernie B. Armstrong, 132nd Judicial District Attorney Ben Smith, Scurry County Attorney Michael Hartman, Scurry County Sheriff Trey Wilson, Scurry County Tax Assessor/Collector Jana Young, Pct. 1 Scurry County Commissioner Terry Williams and Shawn McCowen for the Pct. 3 Scurry County Commissioners’ Court seat.
Also on the ballot without opposition were state Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, and state Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock.
