Several local groups have Veterans Day activities planned for Monday.
Snyder Junior High School and Snyder High School will both present Veterans Day programs Monday. Starting at 10 a.m., SJHS will hold a choir concert in honor of the sacrifices and service given by veterans.
“Our Junior High Choir is presenting a Veterans Day program, and we’re inviting the community and veterans who served,” said SJHS Choir Director Sarah Crager. “We’ll be presenting some patriotic music dedicated to them and their service. That’s at 10 a.m. in the cafeteria at the Junior High on Monday.”
Crager said there is no charge for admission, and everyone is welcome.
“We’ll have some recognition of our veterans, and then we’ll sing six songs,” she said. “I don’t expect it to last longer than 30 minutes, probably closer to 20.”
At 11 a.m., the tribute to veterans will continue in Worsham Auditorium at Snyder High School.
“We will have an assembly at 11 o’clock on Monday for our students and any veterans who would like to come and attend, said SHS Principal Janell Martin. “Zack Carlock is our speech/debate teacher, who is a veteran himself, and he will be the keynote speaker. And then following that, our culinary arts department will be providing a lunch for any veterans and their families who may be in attendance.”
As with the SJHS concert, the community is welcome to attend, Martin said.
“Anyone is welcome to come. Our student body will be there, and any veterans will be recognized,” she said. “Any member of the public is welcome to come as well. This is all sponsored by our student council.”
Western Texas College will also hold a Veterans Day program Monday at 11 a.m. An outdoors event was planned to be held near the main entrance to the college, but likely inclement weather has led WTC administrators to move the program indoors at the Scurry County Museum, 6200 College Ave. A reception will follow at the museum. The program and reception are free.
Ira Independent School District will hold a Veterans Day program at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the school’s cafetorium. Ira Elementary students will perform patriotic songs, followed by refreshments for those in attendance. Members of the public — especially military veterans — are welcome to attend.
