The Snyder High School theatre department will host Theatre for Change, a variety show featuring artistic pieces based on real-world issues, at 7 p.m. Saturday in Worsham Auditorium.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will go to a charitable foundation selected by the theatre students.
Theatre Director Craig Robertson presented a challenge to students in his varsity theatre, JV theatre and musical theatre classes the first week of school — find an important issue they were passionate about. The students were assigned to express their issue through an artistic medium.
The group of more than 60 students wrote poems, choreographed dance routines and put together photography galleries dealing with issues like war, anxiety and equality.
“Some of the kids have written original songs and some have taken existing songs they think represent an issue they believe is important,” Robertson said. “Every student had to create something, but not every student was required to perform. Some students maybe wrote a poem and then passed it on to someone else to perform.”
Robertson said Theatre for Change has been a good experience for him and the students. He said the idea of the project was to encourage and challenge students to think about the world as a whole and how they can make an impact.
“I have already seen them mature so much in these months and they are far more aware about world issues than I was at their age,” Robertson said. “One of the words we focus on is ‘impact,’ and how can they have an impact on the world. I’m so excited for this project.”
