The Snyder Rotary Club donated new dictionaries this week to third grade students at Scurry County schools as part of the club’s annual literacy awareness program.
Club member and Scurry County Library Director Linda Jones distributed dictionaries to students at Ira, Hermleigh, Snyder Primary School and Snyder Christian School.
Jones has been helping with the program since 2011.
Although she is unsure when the club began the dictionary program, Jones said the club has records as far back as 2008.
Each dictionary had the child’s name inscribed in them, along with the Rotary Club’s Four-Way Test.
Jones said she believes the program is important to help children develop proper grammar and writing skills for the future.
“Hopefully, these kids will use them for a long time,” Jones said. “I think it’s a great tool, a dictionary. It’s a tool they can use forever. Even if it’s a dictionary on their phone, that helps. But we’re giving them these to take with them for the rest of their lives.”
