Scurry County has gotten quite a bit of rainfall over the past two days.
In an interview Wednesday afternoon, meteorologist Rick Hluchan of Midland’s National Weather Service office confirmed that about two inches of rain landed on Scurry County Tuesday and Wednesday.
“In the last two days, since Tuesday morning, when it all started, it looks like we have had a little over two inches in Snyder, 2.05 to be exact,” he said. “I do notice on radar it looks like it’s still raining up there, but it’s lightened up. I don’t expect much more this evening. Maybe a few light showers. It’s not going to accumulate much more, so just over two inches should be the total.”
Hluchan said a system moving from west to east through the area is the source of the moisture and cooler temperatures.
“We had a strong storm system that moved east across northern Mexico and into the area yesterday, and out ahead of it we had a few strong storms, mainly across the eastern Permian Basin,” he said. “So we had a cold front that moved through that kept temperatures in the 40s all day in Snyder.”
Although the system produced locally heavy rainfall, the area was spared from any more severe weather, he added.
Scurry County AgriLife Extension agent Greg Gruben said the rainfall was highly beneficial to local farmers.
“Everything about that will be good. The way it fell, so slow, we wouldn’t have had a lot of damage in terms of messing up terraces or washing out,” he said. “Now, the worst thing you would say about the rain, which is not bad, but if you had a tank or like Lake J.B. Thomas, it did not probably rain hard enough to run much water, in terms of catching water in tanks or the lake. But in terms of the crops there would be nothing but positive from that rainfall. This time of year, that’s just not normal for us to get a rain like that. With that and where we were with the snow before, it’s got the guys set up really good. We don’t need Mother Nature to shut off the faucet this summer, and everything will be good.”
Hluchan said the local weather will remain dry for a few days, with more rain shaping up this weekend.
“Locally, we’re expecting to dry out tonight, and for the next several days,” he said. “We actually have some more rain chances Sunday and next week. ”
The area might just be done with winter weather for the year, he said.
“We don’t have any winter weather,” he said. “Actually we don’t even have a freeze in the forecast, at least for the next week or so. Temperatures will actually stay near normal for the next, about four days, then rising above normal next week.”
