Ambre Rinehart, a second grade math teacher at Snyder Primary School, began an on-line fundraiser to purchase five Kindle Fire e-readers for her students to use in class.
“I got started on it because my friend, Michael Humphrey, who owns Sonic Drive-In, told me about Sonic’s Limeades for Learning and that he thought it would be really good thing for my classroom. I want my kids to know that technology is for so much more than just social media,” Rinehart said. “Social media is great, but there is so much learning that can be done with technology.”
People may donate to her project, Techy Teaching, through donorschoose.org.
Rinehart said when the fundraiser began on Oct. 16, friends, former co-workers and family began donating right away.
She is less than $150 from her goal, which is $573. She also stated that donorschoose.org has matched $60.
Rinehart is also one of five Snyder Education Foundation $500 grant recipients.
“Honestly before I signed up for Limeades for Learning, Snyder put out applications for Snyder Education Foundation grants and I signed up for it, but I thought, ‘I will never win this, but I’m going to try because my kids need handy technology,’” Rinehart said. “I was like, ‘I won,’ and I just started crying and my kids were like, ‘Are you OK?’”
Rinehart said if she reaches her online fundraising goal, representatives from donorschoose.org will purchase the tablets and mail them to her.
She said she plans to use the foundation’s grant to purchase two more Kindle Fires, protective cases and e-books for all the tablets.
She also said the students can use the e-readers to log on to IXL, a math program purchased by Snyder ISD.
“My goal for second grade math is that I want the kids to learn how to enjoy school and I want to make it fun and innovative. I don’t want it to be just sit-down work,” she said. “They need to know how to enjoy learning, because that is what makes them lifelong learners. That is important to me.”
She said the students are excited about the fundraiser.
“The students have made thank you books for all the donors and we plan to mail them to them,” Rinehart said.
Rinehart said Melissa Sorrells, a fourth grade teacher at Snyder Intermediate School, also has a donorschoose.org page and is trying to raise funds for four iPad Minis.
