Snyder High School's theatre department students will work tonight’s burgers and beans dinner, as well as the concession stand, at the West Texas Western Swing Festival.
The money will be used to offset costs for next year’s trip to Scotland for the largest fine arts festival in the world.
Director Craig Robertson learned last year that the theatre department was nominated by Western Texas College theatre instructor Ray Newton to participate in the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF), part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Robertson said it was an honor to receive the nomination, but did not expect much when he filled out the application for the festival.
“I wasn’t sure if we would get it, but I thought I would put my hat in the ring,” Robertson said.
The 10-day trip, in August 2017, is not cheap and the department will raise money at various events.
“Hopefully it will raise a ton of money and raise the awareness,” Robertson said of this weekend’s festival. “It’s obviously an honor to have been nominated and chosen, and I think it is a testament to what we’ve built the past few years.”
Robertson said the Snyder’s educational philosophy stood out on the application.  He said the commitment and positive attitude his students displayed are reasons they were selected.
“It’s about more than theatre,” Robertson said. “We talk about how everybody has a part. I asked the students what they want this department to achieve and they didn’t talk about winning competitions, commitment, communication and teamwork.”
