Tuesday is the final day a person may register to vote or change information in order to cast a ballot on Nov. 6.
This week, County Clerk Melody Appleton learned that some people may have attempted to register online, which is not a legal way to register. She said anyone who registered to vote on the vote.org website should check with her office to make sure they are registered.
Appleton said the state requires an authentic signature on the registration form, which means the form may be downloaded from the Texas Secretary of State’s website, but must be filled out, signed and mailed to or turned in to her office.
She said the recent voter drive at Western Texas College was done correctly and the people who mailed the form should be registered, but they should still check with their local county clerk’s office.
“All Texas voters should be extremely cautious when handing over personal and sensitive information to any unknown third party,” Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos said. “I urge voters to always visit VoteTexas.gov for accurate information about registering to vote and voting in Texas. My office is committed to ensuring all Texans understand proper and legal procedures for registering to vote, and that all Texans who are eligible have the opportunity to submit valid registrations ahead of next week’s Oct. 9 deadline.”
Appleton’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday to help people register or udpate information.
The Nov. 6 elections will feature several statewide elections, but no county offices will be contested. Scurry County voters will decide on the District 83 Texas House of Representatives seat between incumbent Dustin Burrows and challenger Drew Landry.
