Unemployment rate drops for third straight month

For the third straight month, Scurry County’s unemployment rate fell, according to figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
In September, the county had an unemployment rate of 3.6 percent, down from 3.7 percent in August. September’s figures showed that 6,440 people were in the county’s workforce with 230 unemployed. In August, the county had 6,605 people in the workforce with 242 unemployed.
The September 2018 rate was also down from September 2017’s rate of 3.8 percent. One year ago, the county had 6,867 people in the workforce and 258 were unemployed.
Andrews County had the lowest rate in the region at 2.4 percent, followed by Kent County at 2.6 percent. Dawson County had the highest rate at 4.8 percent.
Other regional county rates were Garza, 3 percent; Fisher, 3.2 percent; Howard, 3.2 percent; Coke, 3.3 percent; Borden, 3.4 percent; Nolan, 3.4 percent; and Mitchell, 4.2 percent.
Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, down from 3.9 percent in August. 
The Texas economy added 15,600 seasonally adjusted non-farm jobs in September. Annual employment growth for Texas was 3.3 percent in September, marking 27 consecutive months of annual growth.
“Texas employers continue to contribute to our state’s success with private-sector employers adding 16,700 jobs in September and accounting for an impressive 402,500 jobs over the year,” said TWC Chair Ruth Ruggero Hughs. “Texas’ continued addition of jobs over a 27 month period demonstrates the competitive advantage and market opportunities available to our Texas employers and world-class workforce.”
The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) recorded the month’s lowest unemployment rate among Texas MSAs with a non-seasonally adjusted rate of 2.2 percent, followed by the Amarillo and Odessa MSAs with a rate of 2.7 percent. The Austin-Round Rock and College Station-Bryan MSAs recorded the fourth lowest rate of 2.9 percent.
