Unemployment rate matches lowest mark of 2016

Scurry County’s unemployment rate for October matched the lowest rate of the year, according to figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
In October, the county had an unemployment rate of 5.1 percent, matching the January rate of 5.1 percent.
In October, 7,418 people were classified as in the workforce and 375 were unemployed. In January, 7,962 people were in the workforce with 410 classified as unemployed.
The unemployment rate is down 0.8 of a percentage point compared to September, when the rate was 5.9 percent. In September, the county had 7,638 people in the workforce with 452 classified as unemployed.
In October 2015, when the unemployment rate was 4.3 percent, the county had 8,610 people in the workforce with 371 classified as unemployed.
Kent and Borden counties had the lowest rates in the region at 2.6 and 2.8 percent, respectively. Mitchell County had the highest rate at 7 percent.
Other county rates were Garza, 3.6 percent; Coke, 3.8 percent; Fisher, 4.1 percent; Andrews, 4.3 percent; Nolan, 4.7 percent; Dawson, 4.9 percent; and Howard, 5.6 percent.
Texas grew by an estimated 13,700 non-farm jobs in October, the TWC reported. The state has added jobs in 18 of the past 19 months.
Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 4.7 percent in October, down from 4.8 percent in September, and remained below the national rate of 4.9 percent.
“Texas employers continue to demonstrate the resiliency of the Texas economy with 207,500 jobs added over the past year,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “TWC and our local workforce boards remain committed to implementing responsive, market-driven solutions and fostering partnerships with industry, education and other stakeholders to support our state’s world-class employers as they continue to add jobs for Texas workers.”
The Amarillo, Lubbock and Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) recorded the month’s lowest unemployment rate among Texas MSAs with a non-seasonally adjusted rate of 3.2 percent, followed by the College Station-Bryan MSA with a rate of 3.4 for October.
