Scurry County United Way is entering the final month of its 2020 campaign and looking to finish strong. This year’s campaign has raised $92,131 of the $165,000 goal as of today.
Westerner Basketball is partnering with Scurry County United Way to sponsor a Teddy Bear Toss on Thursday at The Coliseum after the Westerners play New Mexico Junior College at 7:30 p.m. This will be the first time the college has participated in the campaign in such a way.
“This was actually put on by WTC,” Scurry County United Way Executive Director Sheila Hale said. “They wanted to do something that was fun and engaging with their crowd that attends the basketball games, but they also wanted to impact their community.”
Fans attending the game are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear or stuffed animal for a child in need. After the game, fans will toss the toys onto the court to be distributed to local United Way partner agencies that work with children.
The stuffed animals donated will likely go to Gateway and the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center, Hale said.
If they receive an abundance, they may donate some of them to the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department for use when a child is involved in an accident or fire.
“There’s a lot of opportunity for where we can use them,” Hale said.
While the teddy bears and other plush toys donated will not count toward United Way’s monetary goal, WTC will be accepting cash donations Thursday that will count toward the goal.
