Wind gusts top 65 mph

Wind gusts ranging up to 65 miles per hour were reported Thursday night during a storm system that rolled through Scurry County and much of the area.

A 65 mile per hour gust was reported at the SnTx Industrial Park while a 58 mile per hour gust was reported at Winston Field. Both gusts were reported between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Due to the wind, a downed transformer was reported at the intersection of Ave. U. and 43rd Street and a broken telephone pole was reported in the 900 block of Coliseum Drive.

Wind gusts ranging from 17 to 65 miles per hour were recorded between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm did not drop much precipitation — 0.30 of an inch at Winston Field — but it did bring lightning that led to four grass fires on Thursday. They were at 7:06 p.m. in the area of Hwy. 350 and FM 1298, at 7:11 p.m. five miles west of Snyder, at 7:46 p.m. in the area of CR 338 and FM 1205 and at 7:26 p.m. in the area of U.S. Hwy. 180 and CR 1614.

According to the West Texas Mesonet website, Fluvanna received 0.65 of an inch of rain and Gail received 0.52 of an inch. The industrial park received 0.34 of an inch and Western Texas College received 0.25 of an inch.
