The Snyder Youth Bowling team sold barbecue and baked goods in front of Snyder Lanes on May 21 to help raise money to go to the state competition in Austin next month.
Ten members of the bowling team will go to Austin the second weekend of June to compete. Bowlers are responsible for their own entry fees, meals and motels.
To raise money, team members, along with their parents and grandparents, baked cupcakes, made popcorn balls and other baked goods and cooked brisket for wraps to raise money for the trip.
Ronnie and Brandy Barclay operate Snyder Lanes bowling alley and serve as sponsors for the youth bowling team and league. Ronnie Barclay said a total of 200 pounds of brisket was cooked for the sale.
Fuller Foods in Colorado City donated some of the brisket and the Knights of Columbus in Scurry County donated money for the rest of the brisket.
The trip will be a chance for the bowling team to compete against other bowlers around the state, as well as spend time with their families and teammates.
Robert Turner, 11, is one of the bowlers heading to Austin and said he is excited to have a new experience with his team and family.
“You’re getting to spend time with your family,” Turner said. “I like bowling because you just have fun doing it.”
James Roden, 14, said he is looking forward to getting to see another part of the state and having fun with his teammates.
“It’s good for (kids) because they’re just able to get out and do stuff,” Roden said.
Brandy Barclay said the state competition is always a fun trip and hopes this year will be no different.
Ronnie Barclay said he enjoys being able to give kids the opportunity to have an activity that promotes teamwork and other positive qualities.
“It gives the kids something to do,” Ronnie Barclay said. “It teaches them values like sportsmanship, while having fun.”
The 10 bowlers heading to the state tournament are Roden, Turner, Matthew Cheyne, Michael Cheyne, Tyler Derouin, Kyler Hodges, Avian Gutierrez, Seth McGrew and Jonathan Velasquez.
