Snyder High School senior Alonzo Wesley is ready to lace up his basketball shoes again.
Wesley became the first Snyder player since 2004 to sign a college scholarship on Tuesday. He will play for Northwest Kansas Technical College, which is a member of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
“I am excited,” Wesley said of his chance to play college basketball. “They have a really good program. I hope this starts a new tradition of players moving to the next level.”
Head coach Lee Scott, who was the last Snyder player to sign a college scholarship, said Northwest Kansas Tech is getting a player who will perform on both ends of the court.
“He will be able to scan the court and take a shot from anywhere. He is one of the best finishers I have every coached,” Scott said. “Defensively, I know he can play on the college level. He can guard different styles, from the 1 to the 4 and if needed, the 5. Being 6-4, he will be able to do that.”
Wesley, who was named the all-Big Country Class 6A-4A player of the year, was named the most valuable player on the all-Big Country Super Team, which is made up of players in all classifications in the region.
He was the District 5-4A player of the year after averaging 18.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
He said his impressions of Northwest Kansas Tech led him to commit immediately. But he has one goal left to achieve.
“I want to play in the NCAA, regardless of the level. That is what I want to do,” Wesley said.
Scott made the signing a team affair on Tuesday.
“This is a team thing. Without your teammates, something like this cannot happen,” he said. “That is why we are here.”
Wesley said Scott instilled togetherness with the team and he hopes his former teammates will continue that trend.
“We bonded as a family all year. That is what coach Scott has taught us. We are one unit,” he said.
