Thirty-two percent of Ira ISD students earned a masters level distinction on the spring State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams this year.
Principal Dale Jones said 149 of the 464 tests administered earned the highest distinction level this year. A masters level distinction indicates that students are expected to succeed in the next grade or course with little or no academic intervention. Students demonstrated the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in varied contexts, both familiar and unfamiliar, according to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website.
At the elementary level, 69 of the 216 tests received a masters level distinction while 46 of the 146 junior high school tests earned that mark. Thirty-four of the 102 high school end-of-course exams earned a masters level distinction.
The highest grade level test that earned the masters level distinction was third grade math at 71 percent (15 of the 21 students).
Jones said the administration and faculty was pleased with the results, which were released to schools by the TEA this week. He said the only trouble area was the writing test. Seventy percent of the fourth graders approached the writing standards while 77 percent of seventh grade students met the standards.
According to the TEA website, approach standards indicates that students are likely to succeed in the next grade or course with targeted academic intervention.
“The writing tests were not as good as we would have liked, but the other tests were very good,” Jones said. “We are very proud of our students and teachers.”
Ira had perfect 100 percent passing rates on the following exams — eighth grade reading, the biology I, English II and algebra I end-of-course exams, third grade, fifth grade and sixth grade math and eighth grade science.
