HERMLEIGH — Despite trailing by 13 points with three minutes remaining, the Hermleigh Cardinals basketball team pulled off a comeback to defeat the Veribest Falcons 49-46, and secure their second straight win.
The Falcons came out of the gates hot and scored 15 points in the first quarter including several 3-pointers to take the early 15-11 lead. The Cardinals were able to keep the score close thanks to hot shooting guard Devin Hildebrand.
He connected on a pair of threes and kept the Cardinals in the game going into the second quarter.
After allowing 15 points in the first quarter, Hermleigh held the Falcons to nine in the second quarter.
The Cardinals, led by senior Kobe Roemisch, scored 12 and trailed by just one, 24-23, heading into halftime.
Veribest began the third quarter the way it had the first, scoring 16 points in the third quarter to build a 40-33 lead heading into the final quarter. The Falcons continued to build on their lead as the 3s continued to fall.
They led 46-33 with three minutes to go before the Cardinals began to mount their rally.
Dayvan Callaway was able to force a pair of turnovers and Roemisch’s ability to attack on the offensive end helped pull the Cardinals back to within two points with just under two minutes to go. The Cardinals took the lead when junior Payton Rivera came away with a steal and scored on an easy lay-up to give the Cardinals a 47-46 lead with 20 seconds to go.
The Falcons sent Hermleigh to the free throw line to try and get the ball back, but Roemisch hit both free throws and the Falcons’ last ditch 3-pointer fell short.
The Cardinals completed the comeback to win, 49-46.
The Cardinals will ride the momentum of the win into the Thanksgiving break and they will return to the court on Dec. 3 when they host Sterling City at Cardinal Gym at 8 p.m.
