Western Texas College officials accepted a $550,000 Texas Regional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Degree Accelerator initiative grant at Odessa College on Thursday.
WTC was one of five colleges selected to receive the grant, which will be awarded over the next three years. Officials have worked to redesign gateway courses in STEM majors and ensure alignment to workforce needs. WTC has also provided professional development for its faculty to improve teaching and learning in STEM fields.
“I am proud our region continues to be recognized for the important role it will play in fulfilling the state’s future workforce needs,” said Sen. Kel Seliger of Amarillo. “By receiving this STEM Accelerator grant from Educate Texas, Western Texas College will have the unique opportunity to participate in an innovative effort to further the alignment between K-12, higher education and local workforce opportunities.”
