Friday is the final day candidates may file for the May 7 local elections.
Only one contested race has developed and one position has yet to draw a candidate. The Snyder City Council, Snyder ISD board of trustees, Western Texas College board of trustess and Scurry County Hospital District are having filing periods this month.
The only contested race on the ballots at this time is for the two at-large seats on the Snyder ISD board. Incumbents Jim Drake and Ron Hester will be joined on the ballot by Lauren Collier. Filing is being held in the school district’s administration office.
The only seat on any of the governing bodies without a person running is the District 2 seat on the hospital district board. Two people filed to run for the board  —Brice Coffman for the Pct. 4 seat and Andrea Martini for the at-large seat.  Filing is being held in the administration wing of Cogdell Memorial Hospital.
All four current city council members have filed for re-election. They are Vernon Clay in District 1, Steve Rich in District 2, Steve Highfield in District 3 and Thomas Strayhorn in District 4. Filing is being held at Snyder City Hall.
Two incumbents filed for re-election in the Western Texas College board of trustees election. Tim Riggan is seeking re-election in Place 3 while Dr. Jay Kidd is running for the Place 4 seat. Filing is being held in the president’s office in Palmer Hall.
Local residents will have until April 7 to register to vote.
Candidates will have until 5 p.m. Friday to submit a free announcement to be published in the Snyder Daily News.
Candidates may submit an announcement of up to 200 words and a quality color photograph at the newspaper office. The announcement should focus on the candidate’s qualifications and not their opponent.
The announcement should be prepared by the candidate or their campaign. The newspaper staff will not write announcements. Also, the photograph submitted should be of the candidate only and not family members.
Announcements will run in the order they are received and the newspaper reserves the right to edit copy.
No announcements will be published in the weekend edition.
The announcement should include an address, telephone number and email so the staff can follow up with any questions. That information will not be published.
