Although their vote will not be counted in the official election, Ira ISD students will let their voices be heard in a mock presidential election the day before the actual election.
Ira ISD will hold a mock election Nov. 7, the day before Election Day, in an effort to teach students about the election process and the importance of exercising the right to vote.
Ira Principal Dale Jones said student council members and teachers are organizing the mock election.
Students in third through 12th grades will register to vote and have to bring their voter  ID card with them on mock election day.
Jones said the school district ordered educational booklets for younger students to better understand the election process, the office of president and the importance of voting.
Ira ISD also held a mock election in 2012, and Jones said the main goals are to inform the children and help them understand the importance of voting.
Jones said the purpose of getting students as young as third grade involved is to help educate them and instill in them the concept of civic duty at an early age.
“We do it to just give them an idea of what the process is,” Jones said. “It’s their right to vote and we want them to know at an early age they have that right and responsibility.”
