The rain that fell during the summer, mixed with hot weather led to an early ginning season for local cotton farmers.
Larry Black of the Central Rolling Plains Co-op said the Nolan County gin has already ginned about 800 bales of cotton and trucks continue to bring modules to the facility.
Black said they co-op opened about two weeks earlier than expected and he is expecting the crop to double last year’s output.
“I’m anticipating between 65,000 and 70,000 bales this year,” Black said. “Last year, we had about 32,000 bales.”
Despite the improvement over last year, Black said it’s not quite as good of an outcome as he had anticipated.
“We had such potential, with all the early moisture,” Black said. “Our last big rain came on July 6. Since then, the rest of it just sort of burned up.”
