Big Spring defeats Snyder in district softball opener

BIG SPRING — A nearly four-year undefeated run through district competition ended when the Snyder Lady Tigers lost to Big Spring 9-4 in a District 5-4A softball game Tuesday.

Snyder’s loss was the first in district play since an 11-10 loss at Sweetwater on March 15, 2013.

Claudia Gutierrez hit a 2-run home run to give Snyder a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Big Spring tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Steers scored two runs in the second and one run in the third and fourth innings for the 6-2 lead.

Gutierrez connected again and hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, reducing Big Spring’s lead to 6-3.

The Lady Steers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Snyder’s final run came in the seventh on Nicole Clark’s RBI double.

Gutierrez led the offense with two home runs and three RBIs. Hailey Morris hit two singles and a double. Jasmine Montoya hit two singles.

Snyder (13-8, 0-1) will play at Pampa in a non-district game at 2 p.m. Thursday.
