HERMLEIGH — Ira’s Isaac Cabrera stole the show at the District 12-1A track and field meet Thursday.

Cabrera began the day by winning the 3200-meter run (11:37.36). In the afternoon, he claimed the 1600-meter run (5:12.03) and capped the day by winning the 800-meter run (2:08.87).

“Isaac usually fares well in 1600 and 3200,” Ira head coach Todd Wall said. “The 800 is a new race and he has been in the top three every time this season. Winning all three was a great day. I believe his endurance and quickness helped.”

Cabrera used different strategies in each race.

“I stayed behind (Hermleigh’s) Colton (Messick) in the 3200 for the first mile because of the wind,” Cabrera said. “I went out and took the lead and won the race. I stayed behind for the first lap of the 800 and started to separate and picked it up on the second lap. I made my move with 100 meters to go and kicked it into high gear.”

Cabrera changed his strategy for the 1600 by leading from the start.

“I started to pull away at the halfway point,” he said. “My plan was to run under five minutes. I ran the first 800 at that pace and tried to keep the pace for the second 800. I wanted to start fast and go for a good time.”

Wall was also pleased with other members of the team. Karson Valentine won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and Asher Fowlkes won the 100-meter dash.

“We had a lot of athletes do some good things,” Wall said. “Asher ran well in the sprints.”

Hermleigh’s Brishaya Sneed overcame a strained muscle to win the girls’ 100-meter dash, an event she qualified for state the past two years. Sneed, who was injured during the 100-meter dash prelims, had a time of 13.22 seconds. She also finished fourth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump.

“Obviously, it was not my day because of the injury,” Sneed said. “All I wanted to do in the 100 was be in the top four and advance to the area meet. My quad started to bother me halfway through the race. I believe with 10 days until the area meet, the injury will get a lot better. I’m excited to get to the area meet. It is my senior year and I want to do well in all my sports.”

Hermleigh head coach Duane Hopper said Sneed showed determination Thursday.

“The injury hurt her in other events, but she kept going,” he said. “I’m hoping the extra time until the area meet will help in healing the injury. It’s tough on an athlete when you work hard all season and can’t run your best at this time of the year.”

Kiki Gonzales won the shot put and discus and finished second in the 100-meter dash and long jump.

“Kiki  had a good day,” Hopper said. “We just wanted to survive and compete at the highest level, whether it is basketball, softball or track.”

Borden County won the girls’ and boys’ team titles.
