Following the lead of many other major sporting events around the country, the Big Country FCA All Star Festival has been cancelled.
The annual festival designed to celebrate the best athletes from the Big Country was forced to cancel the 2020 festival due to ongoing concerns over COVID-19.
“It is with heavy disappointment that due to continued risks and uncertainties associated with the widespread Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, the Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes staff has made the difficult decision to cancel the Big Country Chevy Dealers 21st annual FCA All-Star Festival,” event organizers wrote in a statement.
“Contemplating the latest information, we feel canceling the festival is the best decision to protect the health and well-being of our 323 selected student-athletes, the 36 coaches chosen to lead them, local communities that host and support our games as well as the hundreds of volunteers who serve the festival so well.”
Seven local Scurry County athletes had been selected to participate in the festival, including Snyders’ Natalee James, Jayden Samaniego and Ryan Rodriguez; Ira’s Nathan Goodwin, Karson Valentine and Anthony Coy; and Hermleigh’s Makia Gonzales.
This year’s 7-on-7 football season and state tournament have also been canceled.
The announcements came after the University Interscholastic League (UIL) canceled its remaining spring events, activities and state championships.
