It has already been a solid career for Snyder High School senior Kamiah Davis.

In her first three years of high school athletics, Davis has collected five district awards in volleyball and basketball, including an all-state nod as a junior in basketball in 2020.

She has been at the center of the Lady Tigers’ attack since her freshman year in 2018, but she will be asked to move into a leadership role in 2020-21. Davis said the excitement is already building for her senior seasons.

“It doesn’t feel like I’m a senior yet,” she said. “It hasn’t set in, but just being able to play my last year, it’s fun to think about. I’m really ready for it. I just want to be the best player and leader that I can be.”

That leadership will be tested right away as the Lady Tiger volleyball team will rely on Davis to take over the setter position.

“Her leadership is going to have a lot to do with our success,” head volleyball coach Mindi Bredemeyer said. “We are going to look for her to set, so that is even more leadership she is going to have to provide. She is going to have to be more vocal. She is a great teammate as it is and she is respected on and off the court, as both a student and an athlete.”

Davis said she is up to the challenge.

“It’s definitely going to be a big change,” she said. “Coming up, I’ve had some great setters. But to have to step into their shoes is a little nerve-racking. It’s what my team needs, so I am willing to do it.”

The Lady Tiger basketball team will also lean on her senior leadership. As a junior, Davis led the team offensively with a team-high 12.9 points per game.

She teamed up with 2020 graduate Natalee James and together, the duo accounted for more than 30 points per game.

“I think it’s going to be really different,” Davis said. “It’s going to be challenging. I’m hoping I can count on my teammates to help with some of that. I’ve been trying to prepare for that over the summer, in my workouts and everything. I am hoping to be able to do that.”

While Davis is being asked to take on leadership responsibilities, she said she learned a lot from those who came before her about being the leader the Lady Tigers will need.

“I’ve been playing with those girls my whole high school career,” she said. “Just being able to watch them and their characteristics and mentalities at every practice or game, has been good for me. I’ve been able to learn what I need to do in that position.”

The Lady Tigers are currently scheduled to kick off the 2020 volleyball season at home against Clyde on Aug. 11.
