Hermleigh defeats Ira in softball, 12-5

HERMLEIGH — The Hermleigh Lady Cardinals scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 12-5 win over Ira in a non-district softball game at Lady Cardinal Field Tuesday.

The Lady Cardinals (2-0) took a 6-0 lead in the first inning on RBI hits by Kelsey Digby and Kami Smith. Morgan Digby hit an RBI triple.

Ira (0-1) scored one run in the third and two runs in the fourth. Karina Cowan hit a solo home run for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lillyan Digby, Amanda Long and Sandra Carr each hit RBI singles.

Ira added two runs in the fifth to close the deficit to 9-5.

In the sixth, Aaliyah Sneed hit a 2-run home run and Morgan Digby had a sacrifice fly.

Sneed finished with three hits with three RBIs.

Kelsey Digby pitched a complete game and struck out 10 to pick up the win. Reaghan Ruiz was the losing pitcher.

In the JV game, Hermleigh defeated Ira, 15-6.

On Thursday, Hermleigh will play Slaton at 10 a.m. and Lubbock Roosevelt at 1:30 p.m. at the Slaton tournament. Ira will play Sundown at Western Texas College’s United Field at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Baseball

Dylan Sorrells, Caden Cornutt and Matt Gonzales each had two hits in leading the Hermleigh Cardinals to a 15-5 win over Westbrook in the baseball season opener.

Sorrells and Cornutt each had four RBIs while Gonzales had one RBI.

Chase Carr hit a double with two RBIs. Justin Wilson had an RBI single and Kelton Carroll had a single.

Sorrells struck out nine in pitching a complete game.

Hermleigh will play Colorado City at 3:45 p.m. Thursday at the Hamlin tournament.
