For the first time in 16 years, the Jayton Gridiron Classic will not be held.
The six-man football tradition has been held in Jayton for the past 16 years, but due to COVID-19 concerns, the school district decided to cancel the event.
“Regrettably, we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 Jayton Gridiron Classic,” school district officials wrote in a Facebook post. “At this time, we do not feel that hosting seven football games would be in the best interest of the safety of our school district and community.”
One of the seven games that was to be played in the classic included the Ira Bulldogs’ season opener against Jayton, the hosts, on Aug. 27 at 8 p.m.
Ira ISD announced Thursday that the team will still face Jayton in Jayton on Aug. 27, but with a 7:30 p.m. kick-off time. No other changes were made to the Bulldog’s 2020 schedule.
Ira held Meet the Bulldogs at 6:45 p.m. Friday, followed by an intrasquad scrimmage. The Bulldogs will be on the road to face Garden City in a scrimmage at 5 p.m. Thursday.
