Hermleigh freshman Aubree Myers went for a layup during the Lady Cardinals’ 83-7 win over Loraine Friday. Myers scored 10 points and recorded seven steals.
LORAINE — There was never much of a doubt how Friday’s game between the Hermleigh Lady Cardinals and Loraine Lady Bulldogs would turn out. Hermleigh won in an 83-7 blowout.
The win extended the Lady Cardinals’ winning streak to eight games and leaves them atop the District 13-1A standings.
Hermleigh sophomore Sarah Murphy made a pair of free throws and Hermleigh (20-5, 6-0) never looked back. Senior Ryleigh Benitez and Makia Gonzales put up solid first quarters and the Hermleigh defense was stifling, limiting the Lady Bulldogs to just one point on a free throw. Hermleigh led 29-1 after the first quarter.
Freshman Aubree Myers scored the first of her 10 points on an easy layup at the start of the second quarter. Hermleigh went on to score 19 points, while holding Loraine scoreless, leaving the Lady Cardinals ahead 48-1 at the half.
Gonzales got the first points of the second half on a layup and Murphy connected from deep, extending Hermleigh’s lead.
Loraine hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second half, but that was their only scoring.
Four Lady Cardinals reached double digit scoring. Gonzales led the team with 33 points.
Hermleigh will have a chance to seal the district championship when they travel to Westbrook on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
