Volleyball is back.
On Friday, the Snyder Lady Tigers hosted the Odessa Compass Academy volleyball team for a scrimmage in Tiger Gym.
The teams played two 25-minute halves, with games not being tracked. In the 50-minute scrimmage, the Lady Tigers outscored Compass 66-50. Head coach Mindi Bredemeyer said she was pleased with how the Lady Tigers performed in their first competition of the year.
“I think it went great,” she said. “I think we have a lot to look forward to.”
The Lady Tigers got off to a hot start thanks to the hitting of senior Kamiah Davis and junior Joanie Burns. The duo connected early and often and the Lady Tigers scored 10 of the scrimmage’s first 13 points. Bredemeyer said she liked what she saw from the Lady Tigers offensively, especially considering the player turnover the team is facing heading into the 2020 season.
“Yeah, I’ll have four new girls up there,” she said. “Really the only seasoned varsity hitters I have are Kamiah (Davis) and Hailey (Humphrey), but the other five that we are looking at are strong. I don’t feel like I have a weakness in the bunch.
The scrimmage was the first high school athletic competition in Scurry County since the COVID-19 lockdown in April. Fans were screened before entering Tiger Gym and masks were required at all times for anyone not participating in physical activity.
Bredemeyer said the Lady Tigers were excited to be back on the court.
“It was great. We were ready,” she said. “It is a lot to do to make sure we are doing right and following all the guidelines that we’ve been sent by the UIL and the TEA and everything. We’re excited and we’ll do anything it takes to play.”
Following their lone scrimmage for the 2020 season, the Lady Tigers will switch to regular season play, kicking off the season at home on Tuesday against Clyde.
The freshman match will begin at 4 p.m., with the JV and varsity to follow at 5 and 6 p.m.
