Lady Westerners come from behind to take down Frank Phillips

BORGER — The Western Texas College women’s basketball team defeated Frank Phillips College, 88-84 for its first win in WJCAC play.
Sophomore Clarrissa Francis led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Frank Phillips College opened with three straight 3-pointers, putting WTC in an early 9-0 hole. They built a 22-9 lead after the first quarter, despite five straight points from Francis.
Frank Phillips continued to find success from deep, hitting three 3-pointers in the second quarter, but WTC began to find its groove offensively.
Sophomore Morgan Dial hit three 3-pointers and freshman Shuntorri Rodgers scored seven points. Despite scoring 22 second-quarter points, WTC still trailed 44-33 at the half.
WTC sophomore Marta Casas Gimenez hit her first 3-pointer and scored five straight points to jump-start the WTC offense in the third quarter. WTC headed into the fourth quarter staring down a 65-56 deficit.
Francis and freshman Carrie Lacy combined to score 12 points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and a 3-pointer from sophomore Klarrissa Cruz with five minutes to go cut the Frank Phillips lead to 75-71. Lacy and Francis then made back-to-back lay-ups and for the first time since tipoff, the game was tied, 75-75, with 4 minutes to go.
Frank Phillips responded with five straight points to bring its total to 80.
WTC would soon take an 85-82 lead on a Rodgers’ 3-pointer with just over a minute to go. Rodgers nailed a layup to extend the lead to 87-82.
Frank Phillips could not catch the Lady Westerners, who completed the comeback to seal the 88-84 win.
WTC will carry that momentum into a road match-up against Odessa College at 5:45 p.m. on Jan. 16.
