Lady Westerners topple Frank Phillips, improve to 10-12

The Lady Westerners basketball team got solid performances from three players in a 68-53 win over Frank Phillips College Monday.
WTC made nine 3-pointers and scored 15 points or more in every quarter as they took down the Lady Plainsmen to get back into the win column.
The two teams both put up 20 points in the first quarter. Frank Phillips scored the games’ first five points before a jump shot from WTC sophomore Clarrissa Francis and a 3-pointer from sophomore Morgan Dial tied the game at 5-5.
The Lady Plainsmen responded with a 6-0 run before WTC sophomore Brooke McGee snapped her first two points.
Frank Phillips extended its lead to 18-9 with three minutes left in the first quarter. WTC got back into the game on a pair of Dial 3-pointers, propelling them to an 11-2 run and tying the game at 20-20 heading into the second quarter.
WTC turned up the defense in the second quarter, holding the Lady Plainsmen to just two points. Meanwhile, Sophomores Kimberly Best and Marta Casas Gimenez drained 3-pointers and five different Lady Westerners got on the board as they outscored Frank Phillips 15-2 to take a 35-22 halftime lead.
WTC relied on Best and Francis in the third quarter. The duo combined to score 14 points and led the Lady Westerners to an 18-point third quarter. McGee added the other four points and WTC outscored Frank Phillips to build a 53-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The two teams went blow-for-blow in the final quarter of play. Francis scored WTC’s first four points, but a 14-0 Frank Phillips run cut the WTC lead down to 57-51 heading into the final four minutes.
WTC shut the door after Dial made her fourth and fifth 3-pointers and freshman Carrie Lacy added another to seal the 68-53 victory.
The Lady Westerners improved to 10-12 and 4-7 in WJCAC play, good for fifth place in the WJCAC standings. The Lady Westerners will host Odessa College at 5:45 p.m. Monday at The Coliseum.
