Heading into the 2020 team tennis season, the Snyder tennis program feels confident about the squad that will take the court.
Head coach Coby Hamlin will have to replace six seniors on the boys’ side and two on the girls’ side. Hamlin said the program has several talented players ready to fill those holes.
“I really feel good,” he said. “We’re actually picking up a few boys that we didn’t have last year who played for me in junior high (school). We’re getting some guys that have tennis experience back, so that’ll be good.”
The Tigers were scheduled to host Midland Greenwood on Tuesday, but due to COVID-19, the Tigers will now open the season at home against Sweetwater on Aug. 18. With the extra two weeks to prepare, Hamlin will look to find out which roles his players will play in 2020.
“Well on the boys side, losing so many, I have a lot of spots to fill,” he said. “I’ve got a general idea of where people should be, but a lot of this depends on who sat at home all summer. I guarantee you, if you haven’t picked up a racket in the five months we’ve been out, hitting a tennis ball is going to look really weird. So just getting back into that routine of hitting every single day and getting our consistency back is what I am really going to focus on.”
Hamlin said the goal in the Sweetwater match is to see how his team does against another team.
“I’ll be looking for how we are going to play against different people,” he said. “Seeing how we play against someone that isn’t your teammate who you play all the time, seeing how you react to someone else and how they may play. We’re going to play schools that have stronger kids than we have and we’ll play others that are a lot weaker. In seeing how they react to those situations, we can learn what we need to work on.”
District play will begin on Sept. 8 at Levelland.
