CHILDRESS — The Snyder Tigers won at the buzzer and later coasted to a second win at the Childress Basketball Tournament Friday.

Alonzo Wesley hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Snyder a 43-41 win against Jim Ned. The Tigers defeated Borger 53-34 in the second game.

Against Jim Ned, Snyder trailed 23-20 at halftime and rallied to tie the game at 30-30 going into the fourth quarter.

Wesley made a 3-pointer to give Snyder a one-point lead with two minutes left in the game. Jim Ned regained the lead at 41-40 and had an opportunity to add to the lead at the free-throw line. Snyder rebounded the missed free throw and called timeout after moving the ball to midcourt.

“The kids executed the final play perfectly,” Snyder head coach Lee Scott said. “We had a great assist by Jayden Samaniego to Alonzo for the winning 3-point shot. Christian Gaona and Barron Wesley set great screens to get Alonzo open. We buckled down in the second half, ran what we needed to on offense and took better care of the ball.”

Alonzo Wesley scored 17 points and Gaona had 12 points in the win.

Against Borger, Alonzo Wesley scored a game-high 21 points while Gaona had nine points and Nathan Kendrick added eight points.

“We took control of the game from the get-go and never let up,” Scott said. “We took care of the ball, ran our offense and took great shots. We pressed Borger and frustrated them to throw the ball away and shoot bad shots. Our defense has been good at the tournament so far. We are starting to take better care of the ball and take better shots. That is helping us win.”

In Thursday’s games, Snyder lost to Peaster 49-32 and Hereford, 63-30. Alonzo Wesley scored 10 points against Peaster while Gaona had eight points against Hereford.

“We played a decent ballgame against Peaster, but just couldn’t hit enough shots,” Scott said. “Peaster is a good team that doesn’t make any mistakes and when you make a mistake, they capitalize on it. We played well enough to be in the game and they just slowly pulled away in the fourth quarter. In the Hereford game we didn’t come ready to play. Hereford played great defense and we kept making turnovers. We have to keep getting better and shoot better. We need to be a little more patient on offense.”

Snyder (5-4) was scheduled to conclude the tournament against Vernon at 10 a.m. today.

“These games are good for us and showing us what we need to work on to be ready for district,” Scott said.
