With only one scrimmage left until the season opener against Littlefield, the Snyder football team has several things it needs to improve on during Thursday’s scrimmage at Slaton, according to head coach Wes Wood.
While the Tigers showed some positives during the Idalou scrimmage, Wood said his team let their energy drop during the back half of the scrimmage. He does not want to see that against Slaton.
“We started off with high energy and then we kind of fell down into a valley,” he said. “I just told the kids, when those things happen, you have to have your leaders emerge and you have pull each other up and get out of that hole.”
One of Wood’s main keys throughout the intrasquad and Idalou scrimmage was finding out who his playmakers are going to be.
He said he is starting to get an idea of who that may be.
“There have been a couple people who have done a really good job,” Wood said. “Greg (Williams) is a game changer. Cam (Smith) was a pretty big playmaker with the ball in his hands and Eli Garcia surprised me with his hands and caught the ball well. We had a kid that was on JV that stepped up. He (Jorge Martinez) did a really good job. He is going to scrimmage again with the varsity.”
While several players stepped up, many struggled against Idalou.
Wood said he wants to see certain positions play at another level against Slaton.
“We need to be more technically sound and have less mental busts,” he said. “In a couple positions, I am looking for more aggression, more of a never back down mentality, because we had a couple people who turned it down. I don’t care who it is, we go in there headstrong and we can live with whatever happens after that. What we can’t live with is backing down.”
The JV and freshmen scrimmage is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
The season opener is set for Aug. 30 against Littlefield at Tiger Stadium.
