Snyder’s rally came up short in an 18-10 non-district softball game loss to Lubbock Monterey at Cates Field Tuesday.

Monterey (2-4) built an 11-5 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lady Tigers (3-6) scored five runs. The Lady Plainsmen scored four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Kerrington Biggers hit a single and two home runs for Snyder while Alyssa Benitez had three singles with three RBIs. Nicole Clark and Alyssa Molinar each hit two singles.

“Kerrington has become a patient hitter,” Snyder head coach Liz Kimbell said. “She is focusing on her pitch and leaving  the other pitches alone. I commend her for doing that and waiting for her pitch.”

Maeghan Medrano and Jessica Carroll both pitched for Snyder, combing to allow 18 runs on 20 hits.

“Our pitching still needs a lot of work, as well as other areas of the team,” Kimbell said. “The pitchers are position players and trying to ease up on their arms before we get to district play. We just want to get through the final two tournaments and keep our pitchers healthy.”

Trailing 7-0, Benitez hit a 2-run single to put Snyder on the board in the second inning.

After the Lady Plainsmen added one run in the top of the third, Snyder scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Biggers hit a solo home run, Montoya scored on a wild pitch and Benitez had an RBI single.

The Lady Plainsmen scored three runs in the top of the fifth to increase the lead to 8-5. Snyder cut the deficit to 11-10 in the bottom of the inning highlighted by an RBI single by Carroll and Biggers’ two-run home run.

“We got hits and focused on one pitch at a time,” Kimbell said of the fifth inning. “We were waiting for a pitch to drive.”

Snyder will play six games at the Seminole Invitational starting Thursday. The Lady Tigers will play Post at 1:30 p.m. and Seminole at 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, Snyder will play Pecos at 9 a.m. and Andrews at 1:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers take on Shallowater at 10:30 a.m. and Midland Greenwood at 3 p.m. Saturday.

“This game was good competition and what we needed going into the Seminole tournament,” Kimbell said. “We must work on correcting mental mistakes and work more on pitching.”
