SWEETWATER — Snyder’s early lead disappeared in the fifth inning due to walks and errors in a 10-9 loss to Sweetwater in a District 5-4A baseball game Friday.

The Tigers (9-9, 0-2) built a 7-1 lead going into the bottom third inning, but Sweetwater scored four runs and took the lead with five runs in the fifth. Snyder cut the deficit to one run in the sixth by scoring two runs.

Head coach Shane Stewart said his team hurt itself by committing three errors and walking seven batters.

“It was our mistakes and walks,” Tiger head coach Shane Stewart said. “Sweetwater hit the ball a little bit, but not enough to score 10 runs. We spotted them too many runs and you can’t do that and win. We were not consistent enough on defense. We need to do a better job of throwing strikes.”

Snyder scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a balk and Matt Bass’ RBI single.

Sweetwater scored one run in the bottom of the inning.

The Tigers increased the lead to 6-1 in the second, highlighted by Brody Jasso’s 2-run double. Snyder added one run in the third on Jarrett Reneau’s RBI single.

However, Sweetwater scored four runs in the third to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Snyder protected its lead in the fourth when the Mustangs loaded the bases with one out. After Jake Chavez committed an error, he started a 5-3 double play to end the inning.

“Jake made a great play,” Stewart said. “I was more proud after he made an error on the previous play and came back on the next play to turn the double play. Brody’s diving catch in the third was a big play. Jake and Brody gave great effort, even though we didn’t win the game. There were a few bright spots, but when you are up 7-1, you need to go out there and finish the game.”

Aaron Escobedo’s RBI single in the sixth cut Sweetwater’s lead to 10-9.

The Tigers will return to action Friday against Brownwood.

“We will have a week to think about this game,” Stewart said. “The game left a sour taste in our mouths. Usually, you don’t have to wait that long before playing the next game. I expect them to respond and not pout over this loss. We still have six district games and need to take advantage of our opportunities.”
