Alonso Wesley scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as Snyder defeated Midland Greenwood 52-50 in the boys’ basketball season opener at Tiger Gym Tuesday.

Snyder never trailed during the fourth quarter with Wesley and Teafale Leonard, who scored 14 points, answered Greenwood’s challenge.

Leading by one point, 45-44, Leonard made a three-pointer and Wesley made two free throws to secure the win.

“Alonzo is our go-to guy and teams will be trying to double-team him, especially late in the game,” Snyder head coach Lee Scott said. “Alonso is tough to stop. Teafale and Ryan (Rodriguez) played good games. Teafale is a young sophomore and showed what he can do. If he continues to improve, he may earn a permanent varsity spot.”

Snyder took the lead early in the first quarter before Greenwood gained the momentum. The Rangers finished the quarter with a 9-2 run to build a 14-6.

Greenwood held a five-point lead late in the first half when the Tigers took over. Leonard had a field goal and Josh Deen’s two free throws cut Greenwood’s lead to 19-18.

“We slowed them down after the first quarter,” Scott said. “We shot too quick early in the game. We came back and ran the offense better and started making shots.”

The lead went back and forth most of the third quarter. Kobe Roemisch scored and Leonard’s three-point play helped Snyder build a 32-28 lead. Wesley capped the quarter with a field goal as the Tigers led 34-30 going into the fourth quarter.

Scott said the team overcame a slow start and played well late in the game.

“We started the game slow and came back to take over the momentum in the third quarter,” Scott said. “They never gave up. We have areas that need work, but the main thing is we competed and got the win. It’s good to win the opening game because the players gain confidence and it makes practice the next day go better.”

Snyder will play at Lubbock High School at noon Saturday.
