Westerners win opening game at WTC Classic

Six players scored in double figures in Western Texas College’s 107-59 win over Louisiana Christian Post Grad in the opening night of the Westerner Classic Thursday.

Isaiah Broussard, Da’Rhon Mitchell, Sergio El Darwich and Jordon Fullerton each scored 11 points in the win. Zac Sadler and Demarcus Hartfield each finished with 10 points.

WTC led 50-29 at halftime after shooting 43.8 percent from the field. The Westerners shot 52.5 percent in the second half in outscoring Louisiana Christian, 57-30.

The Westerners held an 80-24 rebound advantage, led by Sadler’s 11 boards. Hartfield added 10 rebounds.

Travis Zeno led Louisiana Christian with 18 points. Austin Hall had 12 points.

WTC will play Strength in Motion at 8 p.m. today at The Coliseum. Seminole State will take on the Wayland Baptist JV at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Wayland Baptist JV will play Strength in Motion at 5 p.m. followed by WTC and Seminole State at 7 p.m.

Women

ODESSA — The Western Texas College Lady Westerners lost to Arizona Western College 59-49 at the Odessa College Basketball Tournament Thursday.

WTC led 10-8 after the opening quarter. Arizona Western tied the game at 26-26 by halftime.

The Lady Westerners trailed 44-42 going into the fourth quarter.

Catara Samuel scored 15 points and had three assists while Mayra Garcia had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Kyra Lewis and McKenna Spikes each had five rebounds. Samuel and Corbriyann Wingfield  each had two steals.

WTC (2-2) was scheduled to play Coastal Bend College at noon today. The Lady Westerners will conclude the tournament with Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa at 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

The women and men teams will host University of the Southwest JV starting at 5:30 p.m.
