Snyder athletic director and head football coach Wes Wood has been building relationships with the athletes and coaches since he was hired last month.
Wood said he has taken advantage of the workouts to make a good first impression.
“Throughout the summer workouts, I have been able to get in there and start building those relationships, he said. “Kids are smart. That first impression is very important.”
The June hiring presented a challenge to Wood and his staff. He has had less time to lay a foundation for the program, adding that it can be hard for the athletes to adjust to a new coach.
“I have been trying to make sure these kids understand that change is what you make it,” Wood said. “I have been really intentional and direct on trying to get them to give me a chance.”
Prior to Snyder, Wood was the offensive coordinator at Azle High School. Wood said he was happy with his situation in Azle, but he saw the opportunity to chase his dream of running his own program.
Wood said he feels “at home” in Snyder and is motivated by the athletes on a daily basis.
“I like the dynamic of the culture and the way the kids work,” Wood said. “It puts me at peace and makes me excited to go to work every day.”
Snyder will begin preseason workouts on Aug. 5.
